HEPA is a type of pleated mechanical air filter. It is an acronym for “high efficiency particulate air [filter]” (as officially defined by the U.S. Dept. of Energy).  This type of air filter can theoretically remove at least 99.97% of dust, pollen, mold, bacteria, and any airborne particles with a size of 0.3 microns (µm). The diameter specification of 0.3 microns responds to the worst case; the most penetrating particle size (MPPS). Particles that are larger or smaller are trapped with even higher efficiency. Using the worst case particle size results in the worst case efficiency rating (i.e. 99.97% or better for all particle sizes).

UV disinfection is most effective for treating high-clarity, purified reverse osmosis distilled water. Suspended particles are a problem because microorganisms buried within particles are shielded from the UV light and pass through the unit unaffected. However, UV systems can be coupled with a pre-filter to remove those larger organisms that would otherwise pass through the UV system unaffected. The pre-filter also clarifies the water to improve light transmittance and therefore UV dose throughout the entire water column. Another key factor of UV water treatment is the flow rate—if the flow is too high, water will pass through without sufficient UV exposure. If the flow is too low, heat may build up and damage the UV lamp.

C. diff står inte längre för clostridium difficile utan för clostridioides difficile. Den var inte tillräckligt lik de andra clostridium-arterna (som fortsatt heter – ium) och fick därför byta namn men då behålla förkortningen c. diff och i dagligt tal “clostridier” (clostridioider har ingen någonsin sagt och känt sig nöjd med sig själv efteråt).

Om du vill verka cool i Stockholm så måste du veta att Folkhälsomyndigheten inte förkortas FHM utan FoHM, vad det lilla o:et bidrar med är det ingen som vet. Dessutom bör du verkligen göra skillnad på Karolinska Insitutet (KI) och (Nya) Karolinska Sjukhuset/Universitetssjukhuset (KS).
